The following German Shepherds
and German Shepherd mixes are being fostered by other rescue groups or individuals in
Northern California, or are in animals
shelters. I have not seen or evaluated most of these dogs, so
I can not guarantee their temperament or health. However, because rescue groups such as
mine or individuals rescuing on their own are offering these dogs
for adoption, I am posting these dogs as a courtesy to those rescuers. As
with rescuing a dog from GSRSV, you will also have the benefit of knowing the
dog's
temperament from its foster caretaker (in most cases).
This
picture appears next to dogs that have proven themselves to be
cat-friendly. Last updated

Please contact the
individual or group name listed with a particular dog for more information
about that dog! If you find that a dog who is listed here is no
longer available for adoption, please let me know so I can remove the
listing. Contact Brian at either bab43@msn.com or 916-655-3125.

Sacramento, CA
Update: Sitka is now neutered,
fully vaccinated and heartworm-tested!
"Sitka"
is a handsome, approx 70-lb, 3-4-yo neutered male GSD who is sweet,
obedient and mellow. Sitka is healthy and will be up-to-date on core
vaccinations prior to adoption.
Sitka is a real love bug. He craves affection and loves to snuggle!
He is good with strangers and will likely be great with children as
he is calm and gentle for the most part.
Sitka gets along great other dogs. He visited GSRSV's Rescue Ranch
on Oct 27, where he interacted with several dogs, both male &
female, and was friendly with all of them. He didn't even object
when one of them barged into the car he came in upon arrival!
for a video of Sitka interacting with the other dogs.
Sitka could very well be fine with cats, though he’ll need further
assessment here. He did see a cat through a glass door, and all he
did was whine and paw at the door; no barking or aggression
displayed.
Sitka appears to be housetrained, as he has spent some time indoors
with no accidents. At his current residence in Sacramento, he is
primarily kept outdoors in a screened in patio.
Sitka has clearly received some basic obedience training. He walks
easy on leash and obeys the commands “sit”,”stay”, and sometimes
“lie down.”
Sitka enjoys playing fetch and chewing on his bone. He also sits
quietly when riding in vehicles.
Sitka was left behind by his owner when she became ill. A woman
named Ann came across Sitka and took him in to keep him from going
to the animal shelter. She is unable to keep him much longer due to
health issues so his need for a new home is fairly urgent.
Sitka is located in Sacramento. His adoption fee is $100. Please contact Ann at 916-628-8204.

South
Sacramento, CA
"Riley"
is an approx 50-lb, 3.5 yo intact female GSD who is energetic,
affectionate and smart. She is healthy and up-to-date on her
distemper/parvo and rabies vaccinations.
Riley is friendly with people of all ages. She is not overly
protective, and I (GSRSV’s Director) was able to pet her inside a
vehicle when I first met her. Riley presently lives with two
children, ages 7 & 9 yrs old, who she is fine with.
Riley is somewhat of a mixed bag when it comes to other dogs. She
has been an only dog for most of her life, with limited canine
socialization. She is very reactive towards other dogs who she sees
when on walks. However, she got along quite well with several of the
dogs at GSRSV’s rescue ranch, indicating that her on-leash
reactiveness is not due to innate aggressiveness. Still, if Riley
were to be paired w/ another dog, we suggest it be a confident,
large male dog.
Riley has not been around cats that we know, so a home WITHOUT CATS
is in order for her.
Riley’s people have kept her outside for all the time they’ve had
her (nearly her entire life). However, a woman (Sabrina) who is now
assisting the people find Riley a new home has had Riley in her
house for several hours and Riley did not have an accident inside.
So, while we can’t say that Riley is fully housetrained, she would
likely become so in short order.
Riley does have a tendency to jump up on people (in a friendly
manner) when she first encounters them but this is understandable
given that Riley’s people keep her isolated in a kennel in the
backyard with limited human contact. She is just so starved for
attention and affection!
Riley enjoys riding in a vehicle and is fairly calm when traveling.
Riley enjoys biting the water stream from a hose and will likely
enjoy playing fetch.
Riley is presently in South Sacramento with her original people.
These people have kept Riley in their back yard since she was a
puppy, primarily inside a chain-link kennel. Sabrina convinced the
people to let her find a more appropriate home for Riley and has
since spent quite a bit of time with her.
Notes from GSRSV: Riley is what I consider a typical working-type
GSD. She is extremely inquisitive, energetic and always on alert.
She would likely be great at agility or similar working-type
activities. She will also need a somewhat experienced adopter who
can help her release the pent-up energy she has from being confined
for so long.
Riley has yet to be spayed. There is no adoption fee for her.
However, a $500 refundable deposit will be required of Riley's
adopter to ensure that she is spayed within 90 days of adoption.
Once evidence of spaying is provided, the $500 will be refunded.
This will all be in writing and a receipt will be provided to the
adopter.
Riley is in South Sacramento. Please contact Sabrina Escandon at
916-308-5651 or Sabrina.Escandon@ctlmanagement.com.

Brentwood, CA
(Contra Costa County)
"Gunnar" is a 2-yo neutered
male GSD who is a happy-go-lucky fella. He loves to run around and
take in his surroundings. He is affectionate and enjoys pets and
attention. Gunnar is fully vaccinated and microchipped.
Gunnar
likes other dogs and wants to play
with them. We don’t know how he is with cats.
Gunnar is quite the handsome
guy. He turns heads everywhere he goes. He is potty trained and will
settle down once he’s had the chance to explore his surroundings.
Gunnar does well alone and in
his kennel, but prefers to be with his people. He can be aloof at
times--that’s the German Shepherd in him.
Gunnar doesn’t jump on people
and is polite around the house. He walks well in a flat collar, but
still needs some basic obedience training.
Gunnar is in a foster home in
Brentwood (Northern Calif). He is available for adoption through Cal
Paws K9 Rescue (https://www.calpaws.org). His adoption fee is
$400.00.
Please visit https://www.calpaws.org/available-dogs

Elk Grove, CA
"Ducky"
is an approx 65-lb neutered male GSD/Akita
who is is the epitome of “shy but sweet.” He has won over the hearts
of both staff and volunteers at the Elk Grove animal shelter, where
he's been housed since September 2023! Due to his initial shyness
and nervousness in new environments, Ducky has been passed over by
adopters time and time again.
While in the care of the Elk Grove animal shelter, Ducky has made
many dog friends and has proven himself to be a playgroup
ambassador. He is an affectionate leaner once he trusts you, walks
well on the leash, and has a wonderful balanced energy – ready to
play with dog friends or keep you company in the yard.
Ducky's adoption fee is only $100.
If interested in adopting Ducky, please contact the Elk Grove Animal
Shelter at (916) 687-3042 and refer to him by his ID #: A050126.

Concord, CA
"Lucky!"
Are you looking for a
loving companion? Look no further! Lucky is a 4-year-old neutered
male German Shepherd with a heart full of love to give. He is
incredibly friendly and well-mannered, making him a great companion.
Lucky also adores the company of other dogs and he plays with the
neighborhood dogs at the local park. (Click
here for a video.) But what truly sets Lucky apart
is his intelligence and human-like demeanor. He's smart beyond
belief, and his ability to connect with people is truly remarkable.
Please click here for a video of Lucky that shows what an easy-going
and personable dog he is.
Lucky
initially exhibited separation anxiety, but it has improved
considerably and his foster caretaker can now leave him alone for
short periods of time without any problem.
Still, Lucky will do best in a home where he is not left alone for long
periods. When accompanied by a human, he is easy to care for and has
a calm demeanor. Lucky began training to help with his separation
anxiety Aug. 2 with Trish King, a well known dog behaviorist.
Underdog
Rescue rescued Lucky from the animal shelter in Martinez, CA, and he
was welcomed into a foster home. However, the foster caretaker was
called to military duty and Lucky is now with her aunt--who has
heart trouble and isn't able to walk him! A shelter volunteer
(Debbie) is walking Lucky three times a week but it’s simply not
enough and it’s hard on the aunt. Further, she will be moving from
her house soon and won't be able to foster Lucky after that.
Lucky says
thank you for considering him as your next pet!
Lucky is located in Concord.
If you'd like to know more
about Lucky please call or text Debbie Rodriguez at 925-933-4842.
Together we can make a difference in the life of this extraordinary
dog.

Santa Cruz, CA
"Minnie"
is a petite (about 45-lb), approx 2-yo spayed female GSD mix who is
cuddly, affectionate, and playful.
Minnie is an absolute dream in
the house. (She's presently in a foster home.) Potty-trained, calm
and quiet, doesn't chew anything inappropriate, and doesn't mind
being left alone. She's a perfect medium size so she can be picked
up if need be and fits nicely in the car, in the bed...in your lap.
DNA tests revealed that Minnie
is a German Shepherd, Husky, Pittie mix. The smarts, loyalty, and
obedience of the GSD shine through all day long. The desire to
protect her home and person has also joined the chat on occasion,
which is very GSD of her, and will be a blessing that requires some
management. We could imagine this coming in handy on the nights
alone after watching too much true crime!
This sweet girl has made many dog friends and regularly goes on pack
walks and hikes with dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds. She
prefers a dog friend who isn't overly flirty and in her face and a
thoughtful intro is important. She coexists peacefully with the othe
dog in her foster home and they play very well together. (Click
here for a video of Minnie playing w/ the other dog.) That said,
peace would not be found with cats.
There is much more to say about Miss Minnie so give us a call or
fill
out an Adopter's Profile so we can really get into the nitty
gritty to see if this gem of a dog could be a fit for you!

"Remmy"
is
an approx. 60-lb, 4-yo (February 2024) intact female GSD/Husky who
is happy, playful and sweet. Remmy is healthy and up-to-date on her
rabies & distemper/parvo vaccinations (both good thru 4-5-27).
Remmy is friendly with strangers, both inside the house and beyond.
It’s unknown how Remmy is with young children, but given her sweet
temperament, it’s almost a certainty she’ll be good with kids. She
loves to cuddle!
Remmy is good with other dogs, and did well with a cat who she was
around.
Remmy is housetrained and crate trained. Her foster caretakers keep
her in a crate when they are away from the house, and also crate her
at night.
Remmy received some basic obedience training and can perform some
tricks like “play dead.” Remmy pulls somewhat when being walked on
leash, however she is not reactive towards other dogs who she sees
on walks.
Remmy rides OK in a vehicle. She loves to play with toys (see video
elsewhere on this page).
Remmy was adopted when she was about 1½ yrs old. Her person, who is
the son of her present caretakers, recently underwent some life
changes forced him to give up Remmy so his parents took her in
temporarily in February, They are now seeking a permanent home for
her.
Remmy Is located in Sacramento near Sac State. There is no adoption
fee for Remmy, but whoever adopts her must get her spayed within 90
days of adoption. A $300 refundable spay deposit will be required,
which will be refunded once Remmy’s adopter provides evidence of her
spay surgery. This will all be in writing.

Reno, NV
"Akela"
is an approx 6-7 yo spayed female GSD mix who is a real sweetheart.
She has been to a vet and she appears to be in good health.
This poor girl was a stray on
the streets for months before she was traumatically chased and
caught and brought to the shelter. She is fearful of strangers, shy
and reserved when in public.
Akela is cautious to
stimulation and doesn't play with toys but is very food/treat
motivated. She typically relaxes around the house and occasionally
will engage in play with her new owner who adopted her from the
shelter and has bonded with him. Akela gets along nicely with his
male Therapy Dog.
Akela would make a great buddy
for an active senior. She is a wonderful sweet companion but
is having a tough time learning to be house trained. She will go out
for walks but still comes in and relieves herself. She is just used
to going outside and will need some time and patience in a new home.
A nice back yard would be helpful, with 6' fencing.
Akela's owner is disabled and
has health issues and cannot keep her. He is terribly heartbroken
that he has to give her up as he has never given up on an animal in
his life.
Akela would be very happy in a
new home that has a calm environment and no children. She needs
someone with experience and who would be around a lot to help her
rehabilitate and blossom into the happy dog she should be. Please
help this sweetheart find a loving home.
If you are interested in
helping Akela, please visit

Fallon, NV
"Duff"
is an approx 8-yo male GSD available for adoption from the animal
shelter in Fallon, NV. Poor Duff has been at the shelter since July
20, 2021, when he was brought in as a stray.
Duff is very friendly with people, but the shelter feels he would do
best as an only dog. [Note from GSRSV: he'd likely do fine w/ a
medium to large female dog.]
A vet diagnosed Duff w/ Degenerative Myelopathy (DM, which is a
non-painful disease of the spinal cord that will eventually cause
Duff to be unable to walk. However, diagnosing DM is not a precise
science and it's possible that Duff just has hip issues. Either way,
he's not 100% in the rear end so whoever adopts Duff should expect
some deterioration in his mobility and be prepared to help him out
with that. (Wheel carts can really help dogs with DM.)
If you're interested in learning more about Duff, please contact the
City of Fallon Animal Shelter at (775) 423-2282.

Fresno, CA
"Sasha" is a beautiful approx
5-yo spayed female GSD who is loving, playful and somewhat alpha.
Sasha is healthy and current on her rabies and
distemper/parvo vaccinations.
Sasha initially barks at strangers who come into the
house, but once they are introduced is very friendly. She’s also
friendly with people she meets beyond her own territory.
Sasha is great with young children; her people have
kids over often and she plays gently with them and loves attention.
She waits patiently for treats and takes them gently from hand.
Sasha has only been around the dogs in her current
home since her people took her in back in June and has not done well
with them. She gets jealous easily when the other dogs receive
attention and drives them away.
Sasha does NOT get along with cats, so a home WITHOUT
CATS is in order.
Sasha’s people keep her outside primarily, so they
can’t say definitively if she’s housetrained. However, they have had
her inside on a few occasions for 2-4 hours and she did not have any
accidents during those times.
Sasha likely received some obedience training
previously as she sits and shakes her paw on command. She walks well
on leash without distractions, and when she sees other dogs when she
is on a walk she only wants to check them out—she doesn’t go
ballistic.
Sasha rides well in a car. She likes squeaky toys.
It’s unknown if she’s a swimmer.
Sasha’s people found her as a stray in June 2021 and
were unable to find her owner. They decided to keep her and had her
spayed in August. Unfortunately, Sasha is very jealous of the
existing dogs in her home which has led to altercations.
Regretfully, her people are seeking a new home for her.
Sasha Is located in Fresno. Her adoption fee is $100.
